Many sources claim Messi and other veterans are on their way out of the club.
This is not yet confirmed but we are likely to see a huge overhaul, if not this year, next couple of years, but we are going to see a change. The question is, can we change our fortunes, while keeping the veterans ?
Short Anser- No, not even Messi.
Long Answer-
Sergio Busquets, Gerrard Pique, Lionel Messi, Sergi Roberto, Jordi Alba, Luis suarez, Ivan Rakitic, Arturo Vidal and maybe I missed one or two, are all on the wrong side of thirty. They are still good, no denying it, but are not good enough to compete at the highest level. Especially the intensity is a big problem for the older players.
Now, the problem is, Koeman wants to build team around Messi. That is ridiculous. Messi is 33, never ever have I seen such things going on. A thirty three year old player, no matter who that is, can not be the corner stone of team and tactics. This is unacceptable. Yes, he would be happy to let the others go, but maybe letting Messi depart with respect is a better option ? I think he does not have to go, but certainly he can not be the cornerstone of this rebuild. We need to base this around the philosophy. The young players. That is why you are here. So, I think my thoughts are clear on this.
Now, there are some things that Koeman should go in the right direction with. He has publicly claimed he would " never play players like De Jong and Griezmann out of their favored, natural position." Which seems to be nice. But, the way it is all going on at the club, we need to understand that we cannot reassure ourselves just yet. We saw how the team did not seem like being coached by Setien. The free flowing, attacking football with intent was nowhere to be seen. Many guess this to be a consequence of the board's shortcoming and pressures. But according to me, it is a mix of several problems that caused this.
1. The heavyweights were not in favor of appointing Setien.
To be completely honest, a club of Barcelona's stature should have nothing of the sort of 'heavyweights' this is not something that should be tolerated. Nobody is bigger than the club. Not even Lionel Messi. Messi maybe the best player in the history of football, Pique may have been the second best center back of his generation, They may have had 30-40 titles, but Barcelona has 91 trophies. Every time the term heavyweights is brought on, I am baffled. I simply can not stand it, and neither should the club. So, they must have refused to listen or act accordingly, I do not know.
2. Lack of creativity in the midfield.
The likes of Arturo Vidal and Rakitic played in the midfield for most of the time. How are we supposed to expect any creativity ? This is not to say that they are bad players, but they simply are not the type of players Barcelona should and does possess. They should not carry on in the team for the sake of the club.
that's it then !
