No. 1. The Picture Of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde.
Not popularly liked, but this novel is a gem. Since I read this, no book has come close to binding me half as tightly as this. This is THE best work of fiction according to me. Maybe I am biased towards psychological thriller, but nobody could argue that this is not a great book.
Plot- " Basil Hallward is what I think I am ; Lord Henry what the WORLD thinks me and Dorian what I would LIKE to be-- in other ages, perhaps" And he made out a masterpiece out of this. The plot is literally the story of these three, according to me; contrary to popular belief it is just the soul selling of Dorian Gray.
Characters- The best character development I have read. We come to know of the most trivial things about the characters and the trifles are almost more interesting ! Was it not for the main plot to be extraordinary, the characters alone would have made a bestseller !
Oscar Wilde was just born before his intelligence was worth the society. Like Copernicus and Galileo, he was hated during his time and now, maybe still many people do not understand him, but they will. They will have to regard him highly.
